Quakers are helping to build the kingdom of God all over the globe! Here is some of what we’re up to:
Here in Southwest Ohio
- Did you know that our very own Wilmington College was founded by Friends? Both the Quaker Heritage Center and the Peace Resource Center showcase how Quakerism continues to shape the college today. If you happen to be a teenaged Friend who’s looking for a college to attend, contact the college about the Quaker Leader Scholar award!
- The American Friends Service Committee has an office in Dayton, which “works to transform Dayton into a global village of peace and prosperity and without discrimination for all the city’s residents.”
Around the Nation
- Many members of our meeting are involved in the work of Friends Committee on National Legislation. FCNL, one of the most respected lobbying groups in Washington D.C., advocates for legislation and administrative priorities that reflect Quaker concerns for peaceful resolution of conflict, justice for the oppressed, poverty reduction, and environmental stewardship.
- American Friends Service Committee was “founded in the crucible of World War I by Quakers who aimed to serve both humanity and country while being faithful to their commitment to nonviolence.” AFSC aims, here in the US and around the world, to challenge and change the broken social structures that lead to violence and warmaking.
- The Earlham School of Religion, located in Richmond, Indiana, provides theological training and education for Quaker ministers of all sorts and for many other types of Christians as well.
Around the World
- At the Quaker United Nations Office, Friends engage in research and lobbying on a global scale. Current areas of work include prison reform, peacebuilding and the prevention of violent conflict, protection of refugees, sustainable agriculture, and highlighting the effects of climate change.
- Many Quakers from the Clinton County area have traveled on missions projects to Belize Friends School. There, children who would otherwise be written off as academic failures are given another chance to shine.
- Friends Theological College, in Kenya’s Hamisi District, trains and equips both men and women for Quaker ministry and service.
- Ramallah Friends School “seeks to promote a constant search for God to all human situations, and to cultivate ethical, moral and spiritual values” while providing quality education to both girls and boys in Palestine.
- Quaker Bolivia Link is an outreach program focused on improving lives in indigenous Andean communities. Most of their projects relate to providing clean, fresh drinking water, although some agricultural projects are also funded.
